Story Overview

Mrs & Mr sets its scene against the colorful cosmopolitan backdrop of Bangkok and centers on one happily married couple — 40-year-olds Vanitha and Robert — that fundamentally disagree on one particular life decision: to have or not to have a child. Goaded by those from the outside and harassed by the biological clock, motherhood beckons to Vanitha. However, Robert does not feel the same way. What then follows are countless romantic, melodramatic, and often overwrought attempts by Vanitha to woo that mate of hers — all within an excess of adult content.

Performances & Direction

Vanitha holds center court with moderate conviction, particularly during those moments that involve maternal yearning and inner conflict, yet she’s distracted by the glam-infested costuming and certain close-up moments that take one’s focus from the gravity of the character she’s portraying. Robert offers a subdued performance and appears more suited to the role than one might anticipate.

Side actors like Ganesh and Aarthi offer occasional comic relief, while Shakeela, playing mother to Vanitha, tries too hard through overacting and poor lines of dialogue. The employment of Powerstar Srinivasan to deliver slapstick relief serves no specific purpose and widens the feeling of chaos that runs throughout the film.

Technical Side

Filmed between Bangkok and Chittoor, the film shines within its foreign segments with brilliant visuals. The production value of the Bangkok segments stands forth prominently, while segments from Chittoor are not refined. Editing is weak, and there are too many segments that meander without need. You always feel that there was no good screenplay or script to start from.

Srikanth Deva’s soundtrack is decent, though there’s one remix of “Rathiri Sivarathiri” that stands alone on sentimental grounds. Though that too comes across as anachron.

What Doesn’t Work

  • Excessive adult content and double entendre jokes that don’t fit the film’s emotional theme
  • Forced glamour and awkward romantic sequences
  • Overdramatic performances and a climax that fizzles out
  • Comedy portions that fall flat, especially in the second half
  • Direction that lacks control and focus

Verdict

Mrs & Mr is an ambitious project from multi-functional Vanitha Vijayakumar, director, leading man, and producer, though one that swings too forcefully on the adult content of the storyline, contributing to the overall sense that this becomes a flashy instead of sincere emotional drama. More tightly wound writing and less flashy delivery might have benefited this to have been an effective work, one that becomes instead an uneven, flashy effort.
